Traditional oil painting : advanced techniques and concepts from the Renaissance to the present

As more and more artists today look to the past, there has been a tremendous resurgence of interest in painting realistically—in creating convincing illusions of three-dimensional depth on two dimensional surfaces. How did the Old Masters create their masterpieces? What kind of education allowed these great artists to create such beautiful work, and how can an artist learn these lessons today? Traditional Oil Painting answers those questions and many more. This comprehensive sourcebook explores the most advanced levels of oil painting, with full information on the latest scientific discoveries. Author and distinguished artist Virgil Elliott examines the many elements that let artists take the next step in their work: mental attitude, aesthetic considerations, the importance of drawing, principles of visual reality, materials, techniques, portraiture, photographic images versus visual reality, and color. Traditional Oil Painting helps artists master the secrets of realistic painting to create work that will rival that of the masters.

The painting of modern life : Paris in the art of Manet and his followers

The Paris of the 1860s and 1870s was supposedly a brand-new city, equipped with boulevards, cafés, parks, and suburban pleasure grounds--the birthplace of those habits of commerce and leisure that constitute "modern life." Questioning those who view Impressionism solely in terms of artistic technique, T. J. Clark describes the painting of Manet, Degas, Seurat, and others as an attempt to give form to that modernity and seek out its typical representatives--be they bar-maids, boaters, prostitutes, sightseers, or petits bourgeois lunching on the grass. The central question of The Painting of Modern Life is this: did modern painting as it came into being celebrate the consumer-oriented culture of the Paris of Napoleon III, or open it to critical scrutiny? The revised edition of this classic book includes a new preface by the author.

The painter's handbook : a complete reference

Much more than just another guide to artists’ materials, The Painter’s Handbook is an amazingly useful resource, with information on everything from the canvas up: the canvas itself, plus paper, sizes and grounds, pigments and binders, solvents and thinners, varnishes and preservatives. Dozens of step-by-step recipes for make-it-yourself paints, pastels, varnishes, gessoes, sizes, supports, and equipment take this indispensable guide way beyond the competition. Authoritatively written by Mark David Gottsegen, chair of the federal government’s ASTM committee on artist’s materials, the revised Painter’s Handbook considers the enormous changes in the art-materials world since the first edition was published in 1993. New materials, new health issues, new information on outmoded and even harmful supplies and practices mean that every painter needs a copy of The Painter’s Handbook.

Things i have learned in my life so far

In 2006, Stefan Sagmeister published Things I have learned in my life so far, a book born from a running list he keeps in his diary. With the support of his clients, Sagmeister began transforming these personal maxims into typographic artworks, which appeared on billboards, in magazines, and in public spaces all over the world. The result is an intriguing blend of personal revelation, visual audacity, and examination of the pursuit of happiness. This revised and updated edition includes all of the aphorisms from the first book along with an additional 48 pages of new ones, and incorporates recent material from Sagmeister’s exhibitions at the Deitch Projects gallery in Soho and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, as well as his current project, The Happy Film. The book retains its unique packaging, now with 18 unbound signatures gathered into a laser-cut slipcase.

Thoughts on design

One of the seminal texts of graphic design, Paul Rand's Thoughts on Design is now back in print for the first time since the 1970s. Writing at the height of his career, Rand articulated in his slender volume the pioneering vision that all design should seamlessly integrate form and function. This facsimile edition preserves Rand's original 1947 essay with the adjustments he made to its text and imagery for a revised printing in 1970, and adds only an informative and inspiring new foreword by design luminary Michael Bierut. As relevant today as it was when first published, this classic treatise is an indispensable addition to the library of every designer.

Jurriaan Schrofer, (1926-90) : restless typographer

In her introductory essay, the design writer Frederike Huygen refers to Jurriaan Schroffer as a ‘computer-designer before the computer’. Schrofer worked for the renowned design studio Total Design and was an outspoken figure within Dutch professional design organisations. He was an experimentalist in letterforms and typography; a pioneer in corporate identity; a designer of photo books; and art director of the architectural magazine Forum. The book is luxuriously printed with a spot Pantone and has an open printed spine. The front and back covers have a matt textured finish.
